The award-winning Texas Medical Center Orchestra returns to the Hobby Center to presnt the first of three concerts in the Mindful Transforations season: The Power of the Human Spirit. Artistic Director, Libi Lebel, leads the orchestra in a celebration of late 19th-century Romanticism with three classical works by composers who overcame adversity to create som of the most memorable music of the era.
Opening the program, the orchesta performs Czech composer Antonin Dvořák’s Carnival Overture. Dvořák describes muscially the path of a lonely wanderer who reaches a festive celebration.
In the second piece, TMCO welcomes Principal Cellist of the Houston Symphony, Brinton Averil Smith, to perform an iconic favorite of the cello repertoire, Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E Minor. Mr. Smith brings his virtuosic skills and intensity to this masterwork for the cello. German composer Robert Schumann wrote his "Rhenish" Symphony No. 3 in E flat major during a burst of creative energy as he began a new conducting post in Rhineland of Western Germany. The music is majestic and lively as well as contemplative, with stunning brass chorales, a pastoral folk waltz, and fugues worthy of a Gothic church.
TMCO is one of the very few orchestra with its origin in the health professions. Most of the members are healthcare professionals who have a dedication to music that goes beyond their daily occupations. TMCO is just the right medicine!
